Giving effective and honest feedback can be one of the most powerful ways of helping friends and colleagues. The keywords are honest and fair. Feedback should never be used as a weapon against people, or in retaliation. Sometimes we don’t always feel comfortable in giving honest feedback to our friends when asked, for fear of upsetting a relationship. However, giving “soft” feedback can do more harm than good, as it could reinforce or give credence to some unacceptable or damaging behaviours. Feedback should be used sparingly and at an appropriate time, which ideally should be within a reasonable time frame of a specific event. The feedback should be objective and factual, and if necessary should describe the effect it had on the receiver, or a group.
